Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for the issues people hit most often.
Updated June 2026
Most issues come down to a permission that isn't granted or a hardware choice. Here are the common ones and their fixes.
Dictation isn't typing my text
If your transcription lands on the clipboard instead of being typed into the app, THOHT doesn't have Accessibility permission.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
- Turn THOHT on (add it with + if it isn't listed).
- Make sure Hands‑Free Text Insertion is enabled in Settings → Transcription.
Until then, paste your text manually with ⌘V — it's always copied to the clipboard as a fallback.
The microphone isn't picking me up
If the recording panel shows an "Audio too quiet" hint, or nothing transcribes:
- Check the Input Device in Settings → Audio — pick the right microphone, then use Test to confirm the level meter moves when you speak.
- Confirm THOHT has Microphone permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- If you use a Bluetooth mic, make sure it's connected and selected.
Transcription seems slow or stalls
- The first transcription after launch can be slower while the on‑device engine loads — it's fast afterward.
- If you have Auto‑unload options enabled in Settings → Advanced, the engine reloads on first use after unloading; that's expected.
- If transcription consistently misbehaves, reset the engine.
- For long recordings, remember the per‑recording caps: 30 minutes on‑device, 9 minutes cloud.
I'm on an Intel Mac
On‑device transcription is Apple Silicon only. On an Intel Mac, THOHT uses cloud transcription, which:
- is forced on and can't be turned off, and
- requires an active Pro subscription to transcribe at all.
This isn't a bug — Intel Macs lack the hardware THOHT's local engine needs. See On‑device vs cloud.
I hit a usage limit
- A "subscribe to keep going" prompt means you've used the free tier's daily demo allowance for cloud/AI features. On Apple Silicon, your on‑device dictation keeps working with no limit.
- A "try again shortly" message is a brief per‑minute rate limit — wait a few seconds.
- A "weekly usage limit reached" message resets at the start of the next week.
Full numbers are on the Limits & quotas page.
Resetting the transcription engine
If transcription returns errors or garbled output, reload the engine:
- Open Settings → Advanced.
- Click Reload Model.
This unloads and reloads the on‑device engine and clears most transient errors. If the engine files themselves look damaged, the same area lets you delete and re‑download them.
Getting help
Still stuck? Use Send Feedback from the menu‑bar icon (you can optionally attach diagnostic logs — never your audio or text), or email info@thoht.app. THOHT is made by a small two‑person team, and a real person reads every message.
